ACTION FOR THE FUTURE.

At BMW, we strive to contribute to a more sustainable future. We are already making progressive steps to get there and are proud of the impact made so far in making more conscious decisions around manufacturing and using a more responsible supply chain. Below are a few examples of what we're doing to reduce our negative environmental impacts.

ENERGY EFFICIENT GENERATION.

The BMW Group is investing in the energy efficiency in all of our locations, exploring the use of hydrogen, biogas, biomass or geothermal energy. The use of hydrogen can play a key role at suitable locations and we are currently examining its efficiency for heat generation.

POWERED BY WATER.

Production of the BMW i4 and BMW iX at Plants Dingolfing and Munich is being powered solely by hydroelectricity. The BMW Group have entered a partnership allowing hydropower to be harnessed from rivers Isar and Lech to produce the all-new BMW i4 and BMW iX. The rivers are local to the production plants in Germany for each car and the partnership contributes to our aim to make more conscious decisions around manufacturing and using a more responsible supply chain in the production process.

PROTECTING THE DEEP SEA.

In efforts to create a more sustainable supply chain, The BMW Group has launched an initiative to protect the deep seas in cooperation with the WWF Germany. With the consequences of deep-sea mining still unclear, a declaration to not use deep-ocean minerals or finance deep-sea mining is our commitment to protecting the deep sea.

SAFEGUARDING INDONESIA’S ECOSYSTEM.

In a three-year partnership with Birdlife International and Pirelli, BMW Group are committed to favour the long-term production of sustainable and deforestation-free natural rubber in Indonesia. The project is located in part of the Hutan Harapan rainforest which is home to around 1,350 different animal species whose ecosystem we strive to protect through a series of initiatives.

EMISSION-FREE CITY CENTRES.

The BMW Group is introducing its innovative eDrive Zones in another 20 European cities, including Copenhagen, Verona and Toulouse. This means that a total of 138 cities in Europe are now benefiting from this trailblazing technology. In eDrive Zones, BMW Plug-in Hybrid vehicles automatically switch to all-electric driving mode. The cars then drive locally emission-free, just like pure electric vehicles.

SUSTAINABLE SOURCING OF LITHIUM.

The BMW Group will be accelerating its expansion of e-mobility in the coming years. This will also increase the need for lithium, an important raw material for production of battery cells. For this reason, in 2022, we will source lithium from a second leading supplier, US-based Livent. By doing so, we are securing requirements for production of our current fifth generation of battery cells.

RECYCLED MATERIALS.

When looking at new products, we consider the entire product life cycle. Within the iX, i7 and i4 floormats, you will see they are partly made using ECONYL® yarn which is woven through the material. Daniela Bohlinger, Head of Sustainability BMW Group Design, sees this as a logical consequence of the growing environmental awareness at BMW. “It is important to us to use recycled materials as the basis for these products. ECONYL® nylon, which is made from old fishing nets and other nylon waste, is a good fit for our needs."

AWARD WINNING ELECTRIFICATION.

BMW has received one of the first Green Hero Awards from Electrifying.com in honour of our pioneering investment in zero emission vehicles and plans for sustainable electric vehicle manufacturing.

BMW x COLDPLAY.

We’re also working on projects outside of the automotive industry, like our partnership with Coldplay. The band’s 2022 global concerts will be powered by the world’s first mobile, rechargeable show battery made from 40 recycled BMW i3 batteries. The batteries will be recharged in different ways, including a kinetic floor that converts the crowd’s movements into electricity – a great way to use energy that would otherwise be wasted.

SECOND-LIFE BATTERY SOLUTION.

A partnership between BMW Group UK and Off Grid Energy gives a new life to retired BMW and MINI electric vehicle batteries. With complete circularity in mind, Off Grid adapt old battery modules to create mobile power units when the batteries can no longer be used in our cars. As a result, our batteries are reused in a second life, reducing waste and maximising use of materials already in the manufacturing loop.

REDUCING PAPER WASTE.

You may have noticed that at BMW we’ve gone digital with our product brochures. By doing this, we can reduce the amount of paper brochures that are created and printed.
