THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY.

The circular economy is an evolution of the manufacturing process. It redefines the basic principles of how we produce things to limit the detrimental impacts on the environment. At BMW, we are developing products to be more reusable and recyclable, keeping existing materials in the manufacturing loop and reducing waste. Read more about our approach below.

ELECTRIC CARS.

Going electric is a huge step towards driving a sustainable future, but emissions-free driving is only a piece of the puzzle. Producing electric cars can actually create more carbon emissions than producing petrol cars if you don’t implement appropriate countermeasures. At BMW, we strongly believe that the future of our planet demands circularity.

BMW’S CIRCULAR APPROACH.

For us, the circular economy revolves around 4 pillars – re:think, re:use, re:duce and re:cycle. Circularity is at the forefront of our minds with everything we create, we extend the value that our products offer, use less resources when producing them and bring products at the end of their lifecycle back into the manufacturing loop.

RE:THINK.

Reviewing, re-evaluating and rethinking every aspect of our production process is a primary focus for us. In doing so, we’ve been able to make changes towards a more sustainable future. For example, working with our first- and second-tier suppliers to increase the use of recycled materials. Or, considering how we can take a more circular approach to energy use, with less reliance on new resources.

RE:USE.

Reimaging the design process is crucial here. The goal of re:use is to extend the lifecycle of our cars and parts, which has been made possible through redesigning. Easily detachable connections, for example, create the opportunity to reinvent a car in a different way, extending its value.

RE:CYCLE.

We look for materials that can be used again when they reach the end of their product lifecycle. Our long-term vision is to make our cars even more recyclable by incorporating mono-materials that can be easily separated.

RE:DUCE.

Doing more with less. For us, that means using mono-materials such as recycled plastic, aluminium and steel, where possible, for easier recycling and increasing the use of materials that are already in the manufacturing loop. For you, that means having confidence in knowing that your car has been produced with sustainability in mind.
